Kalkan Apartment

Historical and geographical sites surround Kalkan.  Patara, Pinara, Xanthos, Thlos and Myra cover ancient settlements from the Byzantine, Roman and Lycian periods to name but a few.  The river gorge at Saklikent and the famous beach at Olu Deniz are all less than an hour away from the kalkan apartment.

For example:

Myra is the site of striking honeycomb of rock-hewn Lycian tombs and a well preserved Greco-Roman theatre, which includes several carved theatrical masks lying in the nearby area.

Xanthos was once the capital and grandest city of Lycia, with a fine Roman theatre and pillar tomb with Lycian inscriptions. The most famous of these is Harpy Tomb which is perched on 7.6m column.

Patara was the birth place of St Nicholas, the 4th century Byzantine bishop who later passed into legend as Santa Claus.  Before that, Patara was famous for its temple and oracle of Apollo, of which little remains.  In biblical times St Paul and St Luke once changed boats here.

The Saklikent Gorge. Here the attraction is a cool dark, narrow gorge about 300m high and 18km long carved out of the Akdar Mountains by the icy churning waters of the Esen River.  You approach the gorge along a wooden boardwalk above the river that opens out into a series of wooden platforms which are suspended above the waters where you can buy and eat fresh cooked trout.  In the summer the Turks come here to escape the gruelling heat and wallow in the cool green calm.  If you want a different kind of sport you’ll find that it is also a popular and challenging place for abseiling.

All destinations can be reached by local busses - Dolmus or taxis close to the apartment. Alternatively private trips can be arranged via a local travel agent or private car hire company.
